Corning is one of the world's leading innovators in materials science with a 166 year track record of life-changing inventions. Corning applies its unparalleled expertise in glass science, ceramics science, and optical physics, along with its deep manufacturing and engineering capabilities, to develop category-defining products that transform industries and enhance people's lives. Corning succeeds through sustained investment in RD&E, a unique combination of material and process innovation, and trust-based relationships with customers who are global leaders in their industries.

We have adopted the layered approach to securing this facility of which AcoustAlert plays an important part of the early warning approach to security engineering. AcoustAlert is fitted to the high security mesh fence and detects any interference on the perimeter. The fence line is more than 600 meters long. The field processors are networked back to the control room on a fibre optic LAN and displayed on the AcoustAlert network software suite. This includes a site map and automatic indication of violated zones. The front end has a guard response section and detailed reports of all events are available.
Enertronica Spa is a company listed on the Milan Stock Exchange that operates in the Energy sector. Its mission is creating value for shareholders by operating with a green, eco-sustainable and modern approach. Enertronica has presence where the renewable energy sector is developing in South Africa and Namibia where it aims to operate in the new frontier of energy savings and of distributed clean energy production.

Protection of these solar farms is critical to not only plant security but also the danger of electrocution when illegally tampering with the solar panels. To this end AcoustAlert is used as a second form of detection to the first line of detection which is thermal cameras with personnel detection using video analytics. The combination of detection technologies ensures a high level of intruder detection whilst also reducing the probability of nuisance alarms. Both CCTV and AcoustAlert systems are networked over a fibre optic LAN. The perimeter is 1500 meter and split into zones to tie in with the camera video analytics detection zones
Since 1978, Dis-Chem has been South Africa’s first choice in pharmacies, and no wonder, with their linked dispensaries, family clinics, comprehensive self-medication centres and so much more. As a leading specialist in beauty, health food, sport supplements, health and well-being, Dis-Chem offers the widest ranges in these categories, along with expert advice.
Dis-Chem. Every day, in every way, striving to keep their promise to be ‘Pharmacists who care’.

The Dis-Chem distribution point for Kwa Zulu Natal is situated in Durban and is bounded by a Clearview mesh fence with electrification above the fence. The body of the fence is protected by AcoustAlert early detection system and besides being an intrusion detection system, it also protects the fence, considering the cost of this type fence, AcoustAlert serves as a form of asset protection. The perimeter is 1200 meters long and the sensor cable is connected to two field processors in weather proof enclosures. These field processors are networked back via fibre optic cable to the AcoustAlert graphics display and control software suite.
Mondelēz South Africa is the largest confectionery business in South Africa, enjoying market leadership in the chocolate, chewing gum and bubble-gum categories. Mondelez are custodian of iconic and well-loved local brands such as Chappies bubble gum, Chomp, Lunch Bar and Dentyne chewing gum as well as the infamous Cadburys range of chocolate slabs and snack bars.

Besides other detection and visual security aids, AcoustAlert perimeter detection has been deployed on sections of the palisade perimeter fence line. This method of detection is unobtrusive but effective on this type of barrier making it simple to do detection which would otherwise be difficult with conventional beam detectors. A great advantage for AcoustAlert is the ability to do detection and follow the fence line. Installation is simple and so is the setup and sensitivity adjustments.

MTN South Africa was launched in 1994 and is part of the MTN Group and boasts over 152 million subscribers with operations in 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East. MTN is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and enjoys approximately 37% of market share in South Africa. The company provides voice, data and telemetry offerings and solutions.

MTN Head Office is situated in Johannesburg. The property is secured with a steel palisade fence and has an AcoustAlert early warning detection system fitted to this fence which spans more than 2000 meters. The perimeter is split into numerous 250-meter zones with double line detection. The AcoustAlert field processors are connected to Gallagher field controllers and networked back to the Command Centre software suite
The Distell Group is South Africa and Africa’s leading producer and marketer of wines, spirits, ciders and other ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages, sold across the world. With a diverse portfolio of brands with rich provenance and authenticity, our products are priced across the pricing continuum to cater to a broad spectrum of consumers. We employ approximately 5 500 people and have an annual turnover of R21,5 billion.

With numerous Distribution Centres around the country, the East London DC employs AcoustAlert sensor cable technology to detect intrusions through its 1100-meter-long vibracrete perimeter boundary wall. The sensor cable is fitted in a zig-zag pattern to effect maximum contact with the wall panels. The perimeter is split into zones corresponding with the electrified fence zones. Alarms are routed over a fibre LAN network back to the AcoustAlert front end software for local and offsite monitoring.
The BASF Group has been active on the African continent for close to 90 years. has been operating in the country for more than forty years, and acts as a regional hub to Sub-Saharan Africa. Besides it’s markets in chemicals, plastics, agricultural products, fine chemicals and dispersions it is involved in the catalytic converter supply train. BASF provides global technical support and marketing services for it products locally.

AcoustAlert was first installed at BASF’s facility in 2009 as a beta installation. This was to replace the intelli-fence system which had been installed a few years prior. The AcoustAlert system was a direct replacement for the previously installed imported system. The sensor cable has been directly installed onto the existing fence line of about 800 meters and split into 8 separate zones. The field processors are networked over a fibre optic LAN network back to the control room. In the control room the zones are displayed on a graphic user interface showing the site and respective zones. The system is controlled by the security officers where alarms are acknowledged and recorded
Bokomo Foods was originally established in 1922 by seven Western Cape farmers, and has developed into a key player across numerous categories in the South African food industry over the last several decades. Their wide range of bountiful brands have been household favourites for decades, and we have become synonymous with breakfast cereals – where Bokomo Foods strive to continually pioneer innovation and create excitement.
WEET-BIX has been South Africa’s number one selling breakfast cereal, for over 75 years.
ProNutro is the Original Protein Cereal - first launched in 1962.

This installation was done for Weetbix by our partner Morné Mellet from Remote Entry Systems in Stellenbosch. The installation was what we call a “stand-alone” installation where there is only one AcoustAlert fitted or if more than one, they are not networked. This installation shows that it is possible and feasible to do AcoustAlert PIDS on smaller installations and it is a great product for installers to add to their offering in meeting ever demanding security requirements.

Well we asked Morné questions about the Weetbix installation:
  • What was the main purpose for AcoustAlert detection?
The main purpose was to give additional detection between the top electric fence strands and the ground on the BetaFence panels (As I call it “The Missing
Link”). The client didn’t want to do electric fence all the way down.

  • Were there any site-specific problems that had to be overcome?
No not really but, we had grounding issues in the sand, so that was sorted when we grounded straight onto the municipal electricity feed of the factory.
The other problems  were the moles digging against the under digs of the BetaFence, but that didn’t continue very long.
